Co-Designed Math Programs
Your classrooms. Your curriculum. Your way.
Districts choose co-designed curricula because they are built with the people who use them. We start from your district’s math mission and vision, and write to your state standards, your schedule, and the routines your teachers already trust. Teachers and math leaders help plan, write, and vet each unit for quality, coherence, and relevance, and that shared work becomes professional learning for everyone involved.
The result is a set of materials that fit your classrooms from day one, so teachers can spend their time teaching without the need to supplement. Co-design also makes materials more equitable. We interview students and draw on local contexts, so the problems reflect the lives and communities of your learners. Grade-level tasks with multiple entry points hold high expectations for every student, and scaffolds and language routines are designed for the multilingual learners and others in your schools. Because every classroom works from the same vetted materials, a student’s access to strong math does not depend on which teacher they have.
The Co-Design Process

Design principles
A shared north star, written with your community.
We start by listening. Through student focus groups and interviews and surveys with teachers and district staff, we bring together voices from across your district, including curriculum, multilingual learner services, special education, and assessment. Together we write a set of design principles that describe what students and teachers should experience in every lesson. These principles guide every decision during development, so the finished curriculum reflects the priorities of the whole district.

Scope and sequence
A standards-aligned map of the course, built together.
With your team, we build the scope and sequence: the units, their order, and pacing that fits your calendar. Every unit aligns to your state standards and is sequenced so skills build steadily across the year.

Units, lessons, and assessments
Lessons, routines, and assessments, written with you.
Coherent Math writers work side by side with district teachers and leaders. We adapt high-quality open-source materials, write new lessons, and build on teacher-designed lessons already working in your classrooms. Instructional and mathematical language routines run through every unit, so students and teachers know what to expect day to day. Common assessments and performance tasks show where students are and where to go next.

Educator review
Every lesson vetted by the people who will teach it.
Unit by unit, a review team of district teachers, leaders, and specialists across departments works through each lesson and recommends improvements. Reviewers bring their classroom expertise to every part of the lesson, from the mathematical goals and task design to the routines and supports. When something needs to change, a teacher holds the pen on the revision.

Production
Print-ready materials with your name on them.
We produce polished, print-ready student and teacher materials branded with your district’s name and colors. Your district receives a lifetime license and editable files, so the curriculum stays yours and can grow with your community.

Professional learning
Ready on day one, across every role.
Curriculum-based professional learning helps teachers use the materials well and builds a system for implementation across the district. By the first day of school, everyone from teachers to district leadership knows their role and how to support strong math instruction.

What Would Co-Design Mean for Me?
District Leaders

District leaders serve on a design team that meets on a regular cadence throughout development. They are the final decision makers on the design principles, scope and sequence, and units, and they bring departments together around a shared vision. The result is a curriculum built around your district’s mission, with a clear plan for implementation across schools.
School Leaders

School leaders guide implementation in their buildings, supported by professional learning designed for their role. They receive walkthrough look-fors that show what strong instruction with the curriculum looks like in action. With these tools, they can coach teachers with confidence and keep math instruction consistent across classrooms.
Teachers

Teachers can apply to join the writing team, the review team, or both, and they are compensated for their time. Commitment is flexible, so teachers can contribute in the way that fits their schedule. Along the way, they build curriculum expertise, take on leadership, and see their classroom experience shape lessons used across the district.
Students

Students share their voices early through focus groups about their interests, communities, and experiences with math. Their input shapes the problems and contexts in every unit. The result is a curriculum that reflects who they are and shows them how math connects to their lives.

Built with Districts
Charlotte Mecklenburg
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) contracted with Coherent Math to write and produce a three year high school math curriculum that aligns to North Carolina integrated math standards, builds off of Illustrative Mathematics’ traditional pathway curriculum, and elevates the mission and values of teaching and learning mathematics in CMS that includes being equity-driven, student-centered, and culturally relevant.

Denver Public Schools
Coherent Math partnered with Denver Public Schools (DPS) to co-design Math 1, 2, and 3. DPS teachers and leaders were joined on the curriculum writing team by district experts in assessment, social emotional learning, multilingual learners, and gifted instruction – making it one of the most diverse writing teams Coherent Math has collaborated with to-date.
The English Learners Success Forum helped co-develop the design principles and materials with a multilingual learner focus from the beginning – not an add on.

Newton Public Schools
Beginning in Fall of 2026, Coherent Math is partnering with Newton Public Schools to co-design Math 2 and Math 3 programs. The new programs will strengthen coherence across classrooms and build continuity across schools, while preserving and spreading practices that are already working for students. The partnership began when a group of Newton teachers attended a conference session about Coherent Math’s co-design model. They advocated for bringing the work back to Newton and letting teachers design the curriculum they knew they needed.
